TV Shows Gone Too Soon

    Hey Everyone,
AC and I were talking about tv shows we still "mourn" over being gone. Many of the series we talked about
were taken from us too soon, usually after a season or two. In this thread, give a shout out to shows that you
wish stayed around longer. No need to be embarrassed, we all like different things. Can be from any decade.
    To start it off:

    Moonlight

    • 16 episodes (September 28, 2007- May 16, 2008)
    • Starring: Alex O'Loughlin, Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring, and Shannyn Sossamon

I know that tv and movies over saturated everyone with vampire tales, but this story of a PI who is a vampire
and a human reporter love interest just worked some how. Unfortunately, viewers like me didn't get to see many story lines
play out that were set up, in part because of the writers' strike that year that disrupted the flow of episodes. They also were in the Friday, 9pm time slot which is pretty rough to do well in. I recently watched the one and only season on the DVD I own, because they surprisedly released the episodes on a DVD. Now I'm mourning the show all over again!!

I am not that into the vampire genre, but somehow this show did it in a way that made it interesting. I thought the chemistry between the (attractive) characters was really good and it had the potential for a few seasons. Apparently it was also a victim of that writer's strike.

A more recent show I'll mention is Selfie that aired its last show (of 13) on ABC a year ago today. The title sounded totally lame and I don't really understand social media, but I saw an article online and it seemed worth a view of the pilot. It had a quirky ensemble cast and I thought the chemistry between the leads was excellent. Special mention goes to David Harewood (in 2nd pic), who I thought was hilarious in his portrayal of a CEO/boss. I feel if they gave it a better title, it could have ridden out the full season.

  4. I agree that the name Selfie made me not want to watch the show, but once I did, I was hooked. I really liked the quirky ensemble characters and the chemistry between the two leads. Not sure why they pulled the plug so quickly with this show....

Not famliar with Moonlight, will have to check it out.

Even though it lasted 4 seasons, I was kind of sad when The Garry Shandling Show went off the air. Easily one of the best theme songs for a sitcom. Proof below:

Haha, yeah, awesome theme song :)

  7. I didn't see the Garry Shandling show when it was on because I didn't have Showtime, but I'll have to check it out now. What's he up to now days? I remember him being pretty popular.

  8. FOX used to run reruns of the Garry Shandling show after Married With Children which I how I saw it.

After The Larry Sanders Show on HBO in the 90s I think the only time I saw Garry was in an Iron Man movie. Not really sure what he is up to now.

Always liked this "cameo" appearance of Garry in this scene from Freaks and Geeks

Come to think of it, Freaks and Geeks is another TV Show Gone Too Soon...

  9. @AC Slater and I are keeping our tradition going of enjoying shows that have three seasons or less, often with a season being only 10 or 12 episodes each. I've decided to just embrace this luck instead of being bummed out about it. Recent find:

This HBO show had two seasons, with 9 years between seasons!! I'm so glad I didn't discover this in the beginning and have to wait 9 years for season 2, that's rough for fans. Being on HBO, they can push the envelope more with language and nudity. There were some pretty epic moments, but I don't want to spoil for others. I wasn't a huge Friends fan, but I always liked Kudrow's character, Phoebe. She did a great job in The Comeback as an aging actress that still loves what she does. We see her get cast for a new sitcom, but not as the lead. At the same time, she is doing a reality series about her comeback. We are watching the "raw footage". Some pretty awkward moments occur. There is still talk of a possible season 3, but I really hope it is sooner than 9 years....

Pretty amazing amount of time between seasons. (The first season DVD cover had first crossed out and replaced with "only".) Also amazing considering many great cameos of characters in the second season from the first. It was kind of hard to see Kudrow in this role initially since I am familiar with her only as Phoebe on Friends. By the second season, that impression went away and she became this new character and felt it was improved over the first season. The meta aspect was a little confusing too at first. (I am just a simple TV viewer.) But overall I enjoyed the series so far.

We started watching this series, it's pretty interesting and a different take on a high school show. It is kind of crazy to see how many from the cast have gone on fairly successfully to do other shows and movies. There are full episodes currently up on DailyMotion.

Yeah, I was glad it was less like the Wonder Years and able to stand on its own. Crazy to see how much Martin Starr has changed since Freaks and Geeks, he's unrecognizable as Bill.

@tangerine spotted him, but she's got a weird knack for identifying people in other things. I couldn't tell it was him at the beginning. First time I saw him was in Party Down, which I'll mention since I'd say almost qualifies for a show that was gone too soon. It lasted for only 20 episodes over two seasons, covering a very dysfunctional group of food caterers for parties/events in the LA area.

Freaks and Geeks might be a topic for 80's since it was set in 1980... Though it doesn't feel very nostalgia driven like The Goldbergs, which is over the top with the references, toys, etc.

I think it was his voice that I recognized first since we had watched Party Down and recently Silicon Valley. Lots of known actors now came from Freaks and Geeks, even people who have extra parts with a couple of lines. Can't wait to see who else we can spot. Thanks @andyandy for giving the show a shout out, we didn't watch it the first time around, but are enjoying it now. I really like the Bill character and Millie. Ooh, I hope they do a scene together!!

Haven't seen Party Down but I think I need to check it out. :-D

Millie is definitely a favorite here too. Lots of great moments in Freaks and Geeks.

Don't want to give out any spoilers, but there is one supporting actor that looked familiar but I couldn't place them ... but blew my mind later when I realized who they were.

Yeah, check out Party Down, I think you'll like it. Millie cracks me up... we just saw the one where she's about to drink beer and go to a concert. Will let you know when we're done with the series--getting close. =)
